Green vs Red Dot Sights: Which Reticle Colour Should You Choose?

Nearly every dot sight in this range is sold in more than one reticle colour, and most people pick one in about four seconds. This is the longer answer: what actually changes when you choose green over red, what the manufacturers' own figures say about the battery trade-off everyone repeats, where the gold models fit, and the specifications that will affect your shooting far more than colour does.

What actually differs: emitter wavelength

A reflex sight projects a small LED image onto a coated lens tuned to reflect that LED's wavelength. The wavelength is the only thing the colour choice really changes, and makers publish it. Holosun gives the red LED in the HS510C and the HE512T as 650 nm, and the green LED in the HS510C FDE green and RONIN AEMS MAX green as 540 nm.

That gap matters because the eye is not equally sensitive across the spectrum. Peak daylight sensitivity sits in the green-yellow region and red sits well down the curve, so at the same power a green emitter reads brighter. In practice a green dot tends to reach a usable brightness on a lower setting and holds up better against snow, sand or a bright wall.

Treat published wavelengths as a guide to the family rather than a measurement. They are not always consistent within one catalogue: the HE512T green listing carried 530 nm where Holosun states 540 nm, and Holosun's table gives 590 nm — its gold figure — on the EPS 6 MOA red part number.

Does green really cost you battery life?

Green LEDs generally draw more current than red for the same output, so the claim is sound in principle. What these manufacturers actually publish is another matter, and it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Across the matched red and green pairs here, the published battery figures are the same — same cell, same rated hours. The AEMS Micro red and green are both rated up to 100,000 hours on a CR1620. The EPS Carry 2 MOA red and green are both up to 50,000 hours on a CR1620. SIG rates the ROMEO-X Pro red circle-dot and green circle-dot identically at 20,000 hours on a CR1632.

Where figures do differ, they differ the other way. Holosun quotes the HE407C X3 green at up to 100,000 hours on setting six against 50,000 for the HS407C X3 red; the HE407COMP green at 100,000 hours at setting 6 against 50,000 for the HS407COMP red; and the HE507 ProMax green at up to 100,000 hours where the HS507 ProMax red is 50,000 hours at setting 6. In each case green carries the longer published figure.

One place in the range does show a colour cost, and it is not a reflex sight. EOTech rates the XPS2-0GRN at 1,000 continuous hours on one CR123 at the nominal setting and 600 hours for the green reticle, and states the same 600-hour green figure for the EXPS2-0GRN. A holographic sight uses a laser diode and a recorded hologram rather than an LED, so its power budget behaves differently.

The honest answer for LED reflex sights: choose on how the dot looks to you, not on battery anxiety. Runtime here is set by cell size, the brightness setting you actually run, and whether the sight has motion activation or solar support — not by emitter colour.

Where gold fits

Gold is a genuine third option rather than a finish. Its emitters are published at 590 nm, between 540 nm green and 650 nm red — a warmer, amber aiming point that still sits on the brighter side of the sensitivity curve. Shooters who find green too aggressive against foliage, or red too dim in strong light, often settle there.

Gold models are specified identically to their siblings otherwise. The AEMS CORE X2 gold has the same 2 MOA dot, the same 1.1 x 0.87 in (28 x 22 mm) window and the same CR2032 rated to 50,000 hours as the red and green versions, and the EPS Carry gold and HS507COMP gold follow suit. Gold is a Holosun choice here; EOTech and SIG Sauer do not offer it. Start with gold dot sights.

Astigmatism and reticle choice

A very commonly reported experience is that the dot does not look like a dot — it reads as a comma, a starburst or a smear. Shooters with astigmatism report it most, because an emitted dot is a point source and any irregularity in the eye's optics shows up in it. That is a reported experience, not something we can diagnose; if the dot has recently changed appearance to you, an optometrist is the right call, not an optics retailer.

What people commonly do about it is worth knowing. Some find the smear less objectionable in green and change colour. Some run a smaller dot, or lean on a circle-dot so the circle carries the aiming information when the dot is untidy — multi-reticle models such as the HS507C X3 and HE507C X3 let you select a 2 MOA dot, a 32 MOA circle or both. Many simply turn the brightness down, since an over-driven dot bleeds far more than a dim one.

The other route is to stop using an emitted dot. A prism sight uses a reticle etched into the glass, visible as a solid black reticle even with the illumination off, and an etched reticle is not distorted the way a projected point source is. Different optic, different trade-offs — fixed eye relief chief among them — and they live in prism scopes.

Two caveats. The SIG ROMEO5 Gen II green is not simply the red one in green: SIG specifies it with a 1 MOA dot where the ROMEO5 Gen II red has 2 MOA, though both are rated at 40,000 hours on a CR2032. And Holosun's solar-charging SCS models, such as the SCS MOS and SCS Carry, are green-only here — internal rechargeable cell, solar charging, no removable battery, with the SCS MOS rated at 20,000 hours. If you want that optic with a red emitter you will need to source it elsewhere; we do not stock one.

What matters more than the colour

  • Dot size in MOA — from the 1 MOA dot of the ROMEO5 Gen II green and the 1.5 MOA centre dot of the ARO EVO SPR up to the 6 MOA dot of the HS407K X2. Small dots cover less of a distant target; large dots are faster to find up close
  • Window size — the EPS Carry gives 0.77 x 0.58 in (19.6 x 14.7 mm) so it hides behind a holster, while the RONIN AEMS MAX offers 1.57 x 1.18 in (40 x 30 mm). A bigger window forgives a sloppy presentation
  • Enclosed or open emitter — an open emitter is exposed to rain, lint and mud, and anything landing in the wrong place blocks the dot. The EOTech EFLX CE seals the LED behind glass where the EFLX 3 MOA is open; the sealed models are gathered in enclosed red dot sights
  • Mount height — the HS510C and HE512T use a 1.41 in (35.8 mm) absolute co-witness mount, the HS515CM is 1.63 in (41.4 mm) lower 1/3, and the ARO EVO ships with a 1.63 in (41 mm) lower 1/3 mount and a low mount, the latter given as 1.05 in on the gold version. Get this wrong and the sight is uncomfortable whatever colour the dot is — the optic mount height guide works through it

So which colour should you choose?

Green if you shoot mostly in bright, high-contrast conditions or want a usable dot at a lower setting. Red if you shoot in low light, against green backgrounds a green dot can wash into, or want the colour your irons, magnifier and training habits were built around. Gold if neither felt right. On these manufacturers' own specifications, none of the three will cost you battery life on an LED reflex sight.
