RMR vs RMSc Footprints: Which Red Dot Fits Your Slide?

You have an optics-ready pistol, a slide already cut for a dot, or a Picatinny rail — and you cannot tell which of these sights will bolt to it. That is a footprint question, and it has to be settled before reticle colour, window size or battery life matter. This guide covers what a footprint is, what the RMR and RMSc patterns are, which other patterns exist here, and when an adapter plate is the honest answer.

What a footprint actually is

A footprint is the mounting interface underneath the optic: the position and thread of the mounting screws, plus the shape and placement of the recoil-lug posts or sockets that stop the sight walking under recoil. It is not the window size, housing length, or brand.

The clearest proof sits inside one family in this range. The Holosun EPS Core RD-3 is listed with a 0.90 × 0.63 in (22.9 × 16.0 mm) window and a weight of 1.4 oz (40 g). The full-size Holosun EPS RD-2 is a 0.90" × 0.63" window at 1.4 oz (40 g) — the same glass and the same weight to the stated figures. Their footprints differ: the EPS Core is a direct RMSc footprint needing no adapter plate, the full-size EPS a Holosun K footprint supplied with an RMR-to-K plate. Two optics you would struggle to tell apart in the hand, two interfaces underneath.

RMR: the full-size pattern

The RMR footprint is the full-size Trijicon pattern, and it is the most widely carried interface in this range. Nothing here is a Trijicon-branded optic, so if you want a genuine RMR or SRO you will need to source it elsewhere; the name describes the bolt pattern much of the Holosun pistol line is built to.

Optics in this range on the RMR footprint include the Holosun HS507C-X2 and its green sibling the HE507C-GR X2; the HS407C-X2; the HS507C-X3-RD and HE407C-X3-GR (7075-T6 aluminium, 1.5 oz / 43 g); the titanium-housed HE508T-RD-X2 and HE508T-GR-X2; and the competition sights — HS507COMP, Ronin HS507COMP-RD, HS407COMP-RD-6, plus the HS507-PROMAX-RD-PRS and HE507-PROMAX-GR-PRS with their forward-leaning sunshades.

The pattern suits full-size and compact slides with room for it, and competition guns where window size is the point: the HS507-PROMAX-RD-PRS is 1.18 × 0.98 in (30.0 × 24.9 mm), and the corrected HS507COMP window is 1.1" × 0.87". RMSc: the slim-slide pattern, and why it exists

RMSc is the smaller Shield pattern used on slim single-stack and micro-compact slides. It exists for a mechanical reason: a narrow slide has neither the width nor the length for the RMR bolt pattern without the screws breaking out of the slide walls, so a smaller interface with closer screw spacing was needed to put a dot on that class of pistol.

In this range the RMSc pattern is carried by the SIG Sauer ROMEO-X Compact SORX1200 — RMSc (Shield) footprint, 1x with a 24 mm aperture, 7075 aluminium, IPX7 — and the ROMEO-X Compact ROSE SORX1208 in black and rose gold. Holosun’s EPS Core RD-3 and EPS Core GR-3 are direct RMSc mounts needing no adapter plate, in 6061 aluminium at 1.4 oz (40 g), IPX8 and 5000G.

One honest limitation: we will not tell you which pistol carries which cut. Our verified data covers optics, mounts and plates, not host pistols, so check your slide cut against the pistol maker’s own specification first. The patterns that are neither

Treating this as a two-way choice is the commonest way to buy the wrong sight. Other interfaces appear here.

  • Holosun K footprint. Holosun’s own small pattern, given as the RMSc pattern. It carries the HS507K-X2 (0.58 × 0.77 in / 14.7 × 19.6 mm window), the HE507K-GR-X2, the HS407K-X2 and the HE407K-GR X2, plus the EPS and EPS Carry enclosed sights.
  • 507C / RMR slide cuts. These are treated as one host interface — the plates here are named for both together, which is why the Holosun KPLT-507C and 509PLT-507C plates share a single host cut.
  • 509T footprint. A distinct enclosed-optic pattern of Holosun’s own. The HE509T-RD-X2 and HE509T-GR-X2, both grade 5 titanium, are 509T-footprint sights supplied with an RMR-to-509T adapter plate.
  • Leupold DeltaPoint Pro. The EOTech EFLX CE fits DeltaPoint Pro and Shield RMSc footprints — one optic, two host patterns, at 1.46 oz (41.4 g).
  • Aimpoint ACRO. Another pattern you will meet on optics-ready slides, but nothing in this range uses it and we hold no verified ACRO figures — so no fitment claim is made here, and an ACRO sight or plate must be sourced elsewhere.

Where the labelling in this range disagrees with itself

Worth saying plainly, because it affects what you order. The EPS Carry family was described as an RMSc-footprint optic supplied with an RMSc-to-K plate — self-contradictory, since a sight already RMSc needs no plate to become one. The manufacturer has it the other way round: the EPS Carry RD-2, the EPS Carry GR-6 and the Ronin EPS Carry RD-MRS are K footprint natively, with an RMSc-to-K adapter plate included in the box. The same correction applies to the SCS-CARRY-GR: Holosun K footprint, direct mount, RMSc-to-K plate supplied.

It lands in the same place — these sights can go onto an RMSc cut — but you are adding a plate, not mounting direct, so everything below applies. Note too that the EPS Core is direct RMSc needing no plate while the EPS Carry is K with a plate: one family, two answers.

Adapter plates: when they are the answer

A plate is a machined interface between slide cut and optic, converting one footprint into another. Three are stocked here:

  • The KPLT-507C puts a K-footprint optic — 407K, 507K, EPS or EPS Carry — onto a slide already cut for 507C / RMR.
  • The 509PLT-507C puts a Holosun 509 series enclosed optic onto that same 507C / RMR cut.
  • The 507C-PIC-MOUNT is the rail version of the same idea, taking an RMR-footprint Holosun optic onto a Picatinny MIL-STD-1913 rail. Corrected fitment: 407C, 507C, 407COMP, 507COMP and 508T — the 407COMP was missing from the old copy.

Use one when the sight you want and the cut you have are genuinely different patterns, or when the sight ships with the plate anyway — the EPS Carry sights and the HE509T-X2 pair both include one.

The honest cost of a plate is worth stating. It adds stack height, so the dot sits higher above the bore than a direct mount and your zero, hold and any co-witness with iron sights shift accordingly. It adds a second interface too: optic-to-plate and plate-to-slide, two sets of screws to torque and two joints that can loosen. Holosun does not itself state the included hardware for the 509PLT-507C, so treat that screw kit as unconfirmed. Where a plate is avoidable — a direct-RMSc sight on an RMSc cut — avoiding it is the cleaner build.

How this plays out on a rifle

On a pistol the slide cut decides the footprint and there is no height to choose. On a rifle the questions separate: the footprint decides which mount accepts the optic, the mount decides how high the sight line sits. The same RMR-footprint optic can sit at absolute co-witness, on a low right-hand lever body, or at 1.93in height, depending purely on the mount it goes into.
