AR-15 Grips Explained: Pistol Grips, Vertical & Angled Foregrips

Grips are a small, affordable upgrade that make a surprisingly big difference to control and comfort. From the pistol grip that sets your firing-hand angle to the foregrip that anchors your support hand, here's how to choose the right grips for your build.

Pistol grips: it's all about angle

The pistol grip sets the angle of your firing hand. The standard A2 angle is more relaxed; modern grips like the Magpul MOE-K2+ and B5 Systems Type 23 P-Grip use a steeper, near-vertical angle that suits an aggressive, squared-up stance and helps with control on optic-forward builds. Shooters with larger hands may prefer a fuller grip such as the Magpul MOE K2 XL.

Texture, fill & storage

Aggressive texturing keeps the grip locked in when wet, cold or gloved. Rubber-overmoulded grips (Magpul MOE+, MOE-K2+) add comfort and a no-slip surface, and some include a sealed storage core for batteries or a bore tool. If fit is a priority, the Magpul MIAD ships with interchangeable straps so you can tune the size to your hand.

Foregrips: vertical vs angled

A vertical foregrip like the Magpul RVG gives a positive, repeatable support-hand hold and works well on shorter setups. An angled foregrip (Magpul AFG / AFG-2) places the hand at a natural angle that lets you pull the rifle into your shoulder and drive it through recoil — the preferred choice for modern shooting techniques. Choose based on your stance and how you index your support hand.
